Highway 49 gets its name from the California Gold Rush in 1849. This wonderful route takes you into the heart of the California Gold Country.
You can start your journey in Mariposa where CA 49 meets CA 140. There you may want to stop and visit the California State Mining and Mineral Museum. Or, perhaps you would prefer to visit the state's oldest court house, which, by-the-way, is still in use.
All along your journey you will find fascinating points-of-interest to visit. You'll pass through Jamestown, Sonora, Columbia, Jackson, Placerville, Coloma, Auburn, Grass Valley, and finally Nevada City.
