What is the likelihood of a ballast resistor failing? If it does, I'm assuming the engine will just die. Is this correct? So do I just install a new one and take off again? Is there more to it than just this or am I missing something? It looks like I have the 2-prong(located on the bottom of what looks like some sort of fan motor) and also a 4-prong located on the firewall of my 77 motorhome.
Thank you
Craig

Dodge ballast resistor is normally a white-ish ceramic object between 4 and 6 inches long with a two wire conector on both ends. Buy two. Carry the spare and you won't have trouble. If you don't have it it will break down 100,000 miles from the nearest replacement in the worst neighborhood in the world. The wires will be traceable to the electronic ignition modual or coil. Either way they fail, without warning and by passing them can hurt your ignition system. Last one I bought cost like 22 bucks. Good Luck

Hello Craig
the 2 prong Ballast goes to the windshield wiper motor

the 4 prong
one side controls the field for the alternator and the other side is for ignition

I was just a kid when our went out and Dad always made sure he had a spare after that. We could not get ours started. It would turn over but not fire. What happens when the engine is running I do not know. Just trying to help. good luck robb

OK so exactly what is going to happen if the ballast resistor fails? Say you're driving along and it fails. Does the engine shut down or what? Again, exactly what will happen when this part fails?
Thank you
Craig

I have one that is failing at just about 5-6 miles as i'm driving down the highway.

It feels like its running out of gas and then the engine just dies with a lot of loud backfiring.

In my case, after it cools for maybe 1/2 an hour it starts working again. I bought a new one about 2 weeks ago and it was $8 from NAPA. Another 5 miles and it dies again.

I'm wondering if there isn't an add on resistor that can be added, or one that has a little more resistance to eliminate the overheating.
