I have a 1984 Travel Queen with a Chevy 454 engine with headers on it. With proper maintenance and care, how long do you think this engine will last? I have heard a rumor that it basically is going to blow-up once it reaches 100K, that just sounds weird to me.

Hello Tony
keep the oil changed NOT cheap off brand oil and filter,DO NOT let it overheat-I just chatted with a guy in NJ his has 155,ooo miles---wanted to know the same thing, but around 100K you might need timing chain and gears---do oil pump too-check the clutch fan---they do go bad---
good luck

I have 454 in my 77 K20 and they are tough on valves. Plan on a valve job every 100K replace timing set while your in there, run good oil (Castrol) and I recommend a Wix filter, keep it changed about every 3K. Run a 190 degree thermostat. I have about 320k on mine now and love it.

One little recommendation: Motorhomes have lots of ground clearance. Go to an auto parts store (not Chevy) and ask for a 2-quart oil filter. It'll probably still be under $15, and will add a quart to your engine's capacity, helping the oil run cooler. Always fill the Chevy 454 oil filter with oil before you screw it on. This way your engine won't start dry after an oil change.
It has been my experience that the OEM timing chain in the 454 needs to be replaced at 50K miles.
