I recently purchased a 1991 Flex bus with a 6V92 that seems to be running hot. When going down the interstate and we go over 50 MPH the motorguard light comes on along with a very annoying buzzer. If we back off of the bus to about 45 MPH the alarm goes off and it all is fine again. If we keep pusing it the engine shuts down.
I called the local transit office and spoke with one of the mechanics and he said that one of the main problems with the FLX bus was they would run hot when on the highway.
Was told to clean out the radiator core with soap and water and it should run cooler. I was also told to check the fan clutch. The fan clutch seems fine and the radiator was cleaned out. The bus still seems to be running hot because we still get the alarm.
None of the guages on the bus work the oil guage bounces around but mainly sits on 0 when it warms up the temp guage doesn't work at all.
My big question here is what can I do to make this bus run cooler when running it above 50 MPH. The bus has a lot of get up and go just don't go long.
Everything I know about cooling systems tells me that it comes down to two things: coolant flow and air flow.
If the coolant is circulating and getting the radiator good and hot, then your problem is air flow. The fan shroud and air intake grill (is it a rear-engine?) can make a difference there.
If there isn't enough air going through the radiator, it will overheat.
First thing I would do is get the gauges working.How do you know how hot it is running.You could have a bad senser turning on the alarm. Check the oil pressure when hot and the level.Good Luck MIKE
