454 CHEVY MANIFOLD GLOWING RED HOT - 1988 RV DUANE LECHNER 5-4-07
I have a 1988 RV with a 454 chevy engine only 26000 miles. The air tubes on the manifold broke off and I called chevy dealer for the parts...they said they were discontinued, was used for air pollution only. So we plugged holes with bolts. When I took it out to check it the exhaust manifold is glowing red when I pull a hill or put it under a steady speed. It glows from the manifold back down the exhaust as far as you can see. Heat shields all the way back to the muffler. Pulled mufflers off to check for blockage, ran it without the muffler and still the same problem. Timing has been checked and set, ok. has a Quadra Jet carbuerator, with no where to adjust as far as I can see. No catalytic converter or oxygen sensor on it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I don't know what else to do with it, can it be ran glowing like that?

Duane I have an 84 Elandan and had the same problem. I put headers that end in 3 inch collector and ran a 3 inch system all the way to the front of the rear wheels. This helped move the heat down the line more quickly. As well I ran 2x 5 inch alum. flex pipes from the grill over the rad. then down onto each cylinder bank as these units dont ventilate well under the doghouse. Hope this is of use to you..Ray

The motor is not overheating runs around 150-180. So I didn't consider the clutch fan. I'm not sure about the timinig, I had a mechanic time it so I can check back with him. If it is running too lean, how do you rich it up with that type of carbuerator, It has no adjustments on it? Thanks.

You can make your heat shields to run along side the engine-to help with cooling mobile home skirting-or aluminum from maybe Lowes or Home Depot,
also your clutch fan might be going bad-get it from gm dealer NOT some parts place---A lean mixture can cause overheating too. did you time it off # 5 cylinder with the vacuum line plugged? and using the bottom mark?

The only other time ive ever seen this was with a lawnmower. i inadvertantly
put pre mix gas in my 4 stroke lawn mower. the added oil to the fuel would bern and the result was the entire muffler would get almost molten it seemed. when i put straight gas in it no more glow. and it was only at sustained high speed. soooooo the issue im looking to introduce hereis blow by at sustained high speed or under a load....um yeah. could happen
Looking for a air pump for 454 Chev Mike 5-29-08
I have a 1988 Motorhome with a 454 chev engine. Like everyone else in the world the engine runs very hot. It also has a Banks Power System on it. I just replaced the Banks Headers at great cost and discovered one of the air blowers is finished I believe it is the top air blower It has KK on the side of the blower. Anyone know where I can find one maybe it will ease the heating problem thanks Mike

I bought a 1991 C3500 Dually to pull my race car and trailer and found my 454 exhaust manifolds were glowing red. My motor would stutter at times and loos some power. Especially when going up a hill. Then my gages started flip flopping like I had a bad ground wire. The heat shields on my 454 were gone and one of the spark plug wires was bad. I replaced them all and checked the codes with an OBD1... Nothing even right after I stopped driving. I check it right away. The truck would back fire low. It felt like it was right under the gas pedal. I was at wits end because no one could find the problem. Finally I ran across this shade tree mechanic in the parking lot of the local auto parts house. He acted like he knew everything and I listened but did not pay him much mind. I told him about what I had done and what was still happening. He told me it sounded like a clogged Cat converter. About a week later I had given up. I bought a cat convert on line and when it came in had a welder friend take the old one off and put the new one on. I also had to repair a couple of wires... 1 on the starter and 1 on the alt caused by the excessive heat. My big dog runs great again. I had the cat tested and everyone said it was ok. But after I changed it... wow what a difference. I don't know if it will help you guys but it is worth looking into. Good Luck Chuck in Dallas

I am looking at buying this 87 tiffin allegro with a 454 engine. We started it up and besides a exhaust leak on the driver side I noticed the right side exhaust pipe from the manifold down about 3 feet was glowing red. The owner said he never noticed this before, but I don't think he ever crawled under and noticed like I did. What could cause this problem. I did notice acorn tops on the intake manifold and was wondering if maybe a exhaust valve could be hung open by debris. Any help would be greatly appreciated as the rest of the unit is in good condition. Thanks Jay.

These are all problems we all seem to run up against. i am now going with a new chip to richen it up and hope that will cool down the exhaust headers on my Bounder 454. New super radiator, new fan clutch, new t stat, w pump, coolant, fuel filter, etc,etc..Up grades is a heat up and a mis fire/lean condition.Lets hope the Jet Elctronics, Huntington Beach, Ca chips cures it.

I have just bought a 1979 Itasca 29 foot with a 454 chev motor. I was planning on towing my 17 foot boat with it. I the previous owner hinted that he had some troubles with over heating. What can I do to prevent heating and are these motors prone to these types of troubles??? Has anyone figured it out yet???

Terry.
