Chevy 454 fanbelt breaking 86 georgieboy Mark 5-11-01
I bouhjt a 1986 Georgieboy, it has a 454 checvy motor. The fan belt keeps breaking the coach begins backfiring and then dies. The mechanics up here have said everything for the fan is to big or the serpentine belt is a bad system. But no one has fixed it. Please help was this a design flaw or can it be fixed thanks for the help

Serpentine belts are pretty tough and they would slip before they'd break, you'd hear some squealing if the belt were incapable of handling the load imposed on it. I'm thinking that the belt is suffering mechanical damage that abraids it to the breaking point. I'd take a good, hard look at the crankshaft pulley due to it's design. Istead of one solid piece, it's a straight piece of stock, formed around a mandrel, to produce the round pulley. I've seen one or two cases where the joint was offset enough to fret away at the belt, causing it to fail. An off-set joint will sometimes produce a "knocking" sound from the motor at idle. If no problem is found there, then check every othe component associated with the belt
