454 knock Jon K 6-11-01
Just bought an '87 Allegro I get a bottom end knock at start and when it idles down you can hear it. Does this sound like the crank bearing endplay caused by the torque converter? I had heard there is a fix with an Allison converter, anyone have specifics? 700 miles from home and needing options. I think we patch up our other problems and sacrafice the motor to get it home and put in a fresh engine.
BTW, if anyone is thinking of buying from Sirpilla RV in Akron Ohio, beware the salesmen will say anything to get you sold and off the lot. I paid a $500 check/repair fee to get the unit up and running. 400 miles out the steering and brakes failed due to badly leaking pump lines.

Some of these engines did have piston and crank problems. This was in the mid to late 80's

Check the torque converter bolts ,they have a tendency of loosening and causing a knock at start up.
Re: 454 knock Ray Yost 7-10-01
I bought a 1986 Winnebago last summer and just starting getting the same knocking in the bottom end.
I get it at 45-50 MPH though.
I have a mechanic looking at it now. He is going to drop the oil pan and inspect the oil and filter for shavings and check the crank bearings. It sounds like a thrown bearing to me but I'm not a mechanic.

Did you replace the engine in the Allegro?

I'd like to know what happened and what you did.
