454 knocking after mechanic work Robert 6-20-01
It's pretty strange, but after having an independent RV mech. tune my 454, change the oil and rebuild the carbm my 1986 Holiday began to knock withing a half mile of his shop. Upon returning the shop is telling me that I must have spun a bearing or thrown a rod and need a replacement. I am sick, but could use some advice verses going with a crate motor or a rebuilt one. They are advising me to have mine rebuilt at a local engine rebuilder and they will install it. $1,700 for the engine and $1,500 to install. Any advice?

If your vehicle was o.k. before you took it in for service, and it mysteriously malfunctioned immediately after, something bad happened in the shop! Sounds like small claims court would be a reasonable course, after one or two evaluations by competent professionals. Good luck in arriving at the truth and pursuing a remedy. (I was successful in small claims when a Ford dealer performed faulty repair on my Taurus). You can prevail if you are persistent.

Are you sure it isn't a lifter knocking as opposed to a rod or crank bearing. Could it be engine knock caused by ignition timing or since the carb was rebuilt maybe too lean of a mixture? Sometimes after changing the oil air gets into the oil system and a lifter doesn't pump up right away and the noise can sound almost like a rod or crank knock. I would get a second opinion to be sure. If it truly is a bearing or rod, My advice would be to look at a crate motor and see what the difference is between rebuilding yours and getting a crate motor. GM offers crate motors with a good warranty as does AutoZone, and some others. Look on the internet for other options. However, I am suspicious that this problem just happened right after an oil change and carb rebuild. How well do you know this tech and how confident are you in his ability and honesty? I guess I am naturally suspicious and believe in "cause and effect" in that things just don't coincidentally happen!

Re: 454 knocking after mechanic work John 6-21-01
How was the oil level when it began to knock? They might not have put enough oil back in it after they changed it.Also check the spark plug wires and MAKE SURE they are seated properly on both ends, distributer and plug. When the plug wire is not on the plug correctly you will get a sound like a lifter knocking. I've had that to happen to my 454.I would double check everything they did and be sure.. good luck

Strange indeed just after being worked on! 454 is known to throw push rods on occasion. Since this was just after an oil change, it could have collapsed a lifter and thrown the push rod. The knock will be distinguised as coming from up-top predominate to one head as opposed to a rod bearing coming from down bottom and audible throughout the engine as a solid clunk. If this is beyond your experience, find yourself an old-timer mechanic for a second opinion.

Careful with the 'crate' engines. Make sure they are EPA and, if you live in california, CARB approved. Many crate engines are NOT accepted by the EPA and CARB as being emmissions legal.

Heads up.
