1996 Chev Blazer Karla Hogan 6-14-06
When driving home I have to travel on a road that has rather steep hills and curves. About two days ago, there was a large dump truck in front of me barely going 10mph up the hill. I saw that it was clear to pass the dump truck so I got into the other lane to pass and pushed the accelerator pad to the floor. This vehicle has probably been up and down these hills thousands of times. Of course, when I pressed the accelerator, My speed revved up and I looked in my rear view mirror and saw that the dump truck was already way behind me. But then, lights on the dashboard lit up (check gauages, etc) and I lost power and pulled over to the side of the road. I just sat there trying to decide if I needed to start walking home. It was embarrassing because the dump truck passed me while I was sitting on the side of the road. I cranked the engine back up and it seemed fine except there was a knocking sound in the engine. My home was less than a mile away so I drove the Blazer home. It has been sitting in the driveway because we are afraid of driving it because we don't know what is wrong and if driving it will do horrible damage to it. Can someone please help me and guide me on how to get it somewhere to get it fixed: can it be driven or does it need to be towed?

Go out and check the dipstick and see if it has oil.Did the knocking sound deep in the engine or something like a tapping noise.Does the knocking sound all the time or just gets louder when you give it more gas? How many miles are on it.? After checking oil you might start it up and see if it still knocking.Usually when a deep sounding knock is starts it to late, damage has already been done. Check oil you may be low and adding oil if needed may solve the noise problem. Good Luck Mike

I have a 1996 Blazer and lately I have had the same problem. I would be driving along and all of a sudden I lose power on and off when I press down on the accelerator. Alot of lights on my dashboard starts coming on such as my parking brake light, Air bag light and my ABS lock light too. My oil is full and I don't have a knocking problem. My mileage is 118,000. I wanna say it could be the fuel pump but I just had that replaced 1 year ago. One thing I will try will be having a friend who actually owns a computer (made by GMC) that you can hook up to the vehicle under the dashboard which will give you a complete diagnostic of the vehicle.

My 1996 blazer had a new fuel pump installed 1 year ago. Now I have to use starting fluid to get it to start. Or sometimes turn the key 5-6 times half way hearing fuel pump working and it starts. Computer reading for service is telling me heating modual is bad in #2 #1 ok. This resets and starting problem stays.
