How many qt's of oil does a chev.454 eng take and what is the best oil I can use? This eng. is in a 34' class a rv 1985. and what transmission does it fit?
Re: chev 454 Gary CC NV 7-24-03
I have a 1987 class A with a 454, and auto trans.with a engine oil cooler, and it holds 7 quarts. I've been using Chevron Delo 400 15-40w. for the last 20 thousands miles, with no complaints. The engine has a total of 47,000. miles, and uses one quart of oil every 1200 miles. I don't use any additives, tried them all at one time or another, thought most are just a waste of money. I do a oil and filter change, every 3 to 4 thousand miles.I don't understand what you mean by this," and what transmission does it fit?" Mines a turbo hydro 400 3 speed automatic.

Capaicty will vary, I suspect yours is like most and somewhere between 5 -7 quarts depending on cooler or not ect.. BUT lets NOT forget the easyest and MOST EFFECTIVE way to actualy HELP your engine while changing OIL.. PRIME your OIL FILTER as Must and as BEST you can.. THAT Means to FILL it will OIL (oil you are using) first and let it sock in to element and fill some more agian and agian, I can get the better part of a QUART in mine... and THAT WAY you have OIL Presure MUCH MUCH Sooner, I have a friend that OVERCHANGED his oil (obsesive and compelsive) and he changed it every 1,000 miles and in 20,000 miles he had a KNOCK... well his engine ran allot with NO OIL PRESURE while his FILTER was FILING Up becasue he DID NOT Prime it.. PRIME your OIL FILTER..

AS to what transmission, Big Blocks (454) were fitted to TH 400 in the mid 80's and later in the late 80 and on in to the 90's they might have been mated to a700 R4 BUT ina MOTORHOME of mid 80s's you in all likyhood have a TH400 three speed D 2 1 with TRQ converter lock up at around 1200 RPM.. STRONG Transmission and TRANS HATE high TEMPS make sure your Tranny cooler is in good shape! and Clean and Service your Trany.. (oil change and filter effectivly)
