Setting the timing Tom 7-17-03
I removed the distributor from a 302, 1990 engine. Can anyone give me the correct procedure to reline the distributor once it has been disturbed.
Re: Setting the timing mike 2-4-04
Check the magnet on the distibutor shaft for cracks its at the very top of the shaft it will be under the pick up coil If it is cracked then you will need to replace the the inner shaft.not the whole dist just the inner shaft its held in with a spring pin located at the bottom of the shaft
Re: Setting the timing Bob 7-17-03
Did you not note rotor position before pulling??? If slot shaft..you will be on or 180 off. If gear, you will have to find compression stroke on #1 cyl.
Always mark rotor pos before pulling, and do not turn engine over after pulling.
Re: Setting the timing Sam Watson 7-18-03
# 1 cylinder is front right side of engine. Using two people, remove # 1 spark plug, have one person stick a finger in # 1 spark plug hole. The other person will "bump" the engine over with the key. The person w/finger in hole will watch the timing marks on the vibration damper at front of engine. When #1 piston is coming up on compression, air will be blowing out of plug hole. Stop bumping the engine over as close to the timing marks when #1 is on compression stroke. Put the cap on the distributor, (to index it), and note which wire goes to #1 spark plug. Make a mark on the body of the disributor to indicate where that wire is. Remove the cap and install the rotor, aligning it's tip with the mark. Install the distibutor, keeping the mark and tip alignment. This will get you in the ball park and get the engine started so you can use a timing light to dial in the spark timing.

You can still be 180 degrees off.
Re: Setting the timing Sam Watson 7-18-03
How so, if you have #1 at TDC on compression stroke?
Re: Setting the timing Gary CC NV 7-18-03
On the exhaust stroke, it can be deceiving sometimes, especially if your going by air pushing out.
Re: Setting the timing Sam Watson 7-19-03
How so, with the exhaust valve open?
Re: Setting the timing Darrell 7-20-03
You need to bring it up to tdc like everyone else said, then you need to rotate the rotery bug to where it points to the #1 cylinder then reinstall, there isent any way to be off too bad, not 180 degrees, if you even half way know what your doing. when you bring the engine up to tdc, you need to hold your finger very tightly over the spark plug hole so the air doesent come out on the exaust stroke
