Overheating 454 engine George 7-9-03
I have a 90 Pace Arrow 34' with a 454. When it is warm outside and I'm on level roadway the indicator is at the half way mark.

When I start to pull a hill the needle on the gauge starts climbing and if it is a long climb it will climb to the edge of the red mark.

Climbing 395 to Mammoth out of Bishop, Ca., it will boil.

Is this normal for the 454 or is there something that I'm overlooking?

You are definately overheating. Do you have an auxilary fan that may not be wotking? Check your engine fan to see if it is wotking properly also. What is the condition of your radiator? It could have a buildup inside preventing a good flow of coolant.

George, I have an 87 Pace Arrow. It has an auxiliary fan that cools it down rather quickly. My problem is if I don't have enough RPMs, I don't get a lot of airflow. I have had some issues on long pulls in the Colorado Mountains where I had to down shift to get the RPMs up to aide in cooling.
Joe is correct, make sure your cooling system is in good shape. No leaks, coolant level correct including the overflow, verify the pressure cap is correct and working properly, the radiator is clean and does not have fins that are crushed. Make sure the hoses are in good shape. Older ones can pinch on themselves when hot that will restrict the flow of coolant.

I know that climb up to June Lake all to well. I've seen many a motor-homes climb the mountain with there foot to the floor, and see them about two thirds of the way up, over heated. The way I've had the best luck in climbing that grade, is when my speedo drops to 35 MPH, drop it in second gear, keep the RPMs at 2500, sit back and enjoy the ride. Unless I'm hauling my 20 over loaded utility trailer, than it's 15 MPH, and 2500 RPMs. The Temp gauge stays just a little over half way. This is all done with a 31 foot class A with a 454, with a 195 degree thermo. When it had the 180 degree thermo, the temp would hit three quarters of the way, without the utility trailer. Thats because the water circulates to fast, and doesn't have time to cool. An electric fan is a good idea, the next time I go to Pick & Pull, I'm gonna get one or two for $15.00 ea., and add it on. That might help that Horse Power robbing factory thermo fan clutch from running so much.

Yeah, that is a killer grade.

Do you have a trans temp indicator? If your trans is getting hot, it will put lots of heat in to the radiator. A bigger cooler, before the radiator, would be a big help.
