Itermittent engine noise while under tow John C. 6-26-03
I observed an intermittent engine noise while pulling my travel trailer last week. My 87' 454 R20 suburban started making this noise that would gradually increase in loudness then decrease until normal engine sound resumed. It seemed that the engine was under strain. It would start and last about 1/2 mile then about a mile down the road start again. It didn't exhibit any over heating or any other issues. If I give it more throttle it sounded like the catayltic converter was blocked( noise would increase; power limited), but would that be intermittent and not experience the problem when not towing. Replaced converter 2 yrs ago. Any ideas????

The first thing I'd do is buy and install a vacuum gauge. After you do this, watch the gauge when this problem occurs. If blockage of the exhaust system is the fault, at steady throttle the vacuum will decrease and power will fall off. How old is you muffler?

I was just trying to see if there are any vacuum leaks, but the gauage is the best idea. My muffler was supposed to be replaced w/the converter 2 yrs ago. I think I'm going to drop the exhaust from mainfold back tomorrow. Thanks
