I have a 1992 Pace Arrow 37J with a chevy 454 on P30 Chassis.
When cold I get a exhaust noise when I acelerate, as the engine warms up it seem to get much better. In fact at this moment in time its bearable but not really acceptable, if you know what I mean.
I assume that the manifold is leaking, and I see a lot of people have manifold trouble.
I am picking up sketchy information, and it seems a lot of people simple change the manifold for aftermarket headers.
Are there any other fixes? for example gasket kits? and if so where do get them?
Also I am a reasonable mechanic, but not used to big V8 more used to working on Jaguars and English cars
what tools do you need to remove manifolds? anything special? apart from hand tools, any tips? like slipping the gasket in without removing the manifold completely?
anything else that I need to replace while doing this job.
I am English and keep the motorhome in Florida, at the moment I am in England, but trying to get my act together for some servicing next trip.
GM makes a gasket that is supposed to fix the problem. Mechanic said the exhaust manifold warps with time and heat. The gasket is $50 CAD. Will post how it works.
You could have several different problems from a gasket, a flange or even a cracked manifold. Find the problem first, then fix it. You can't start guessing at what it is.
On mine, I let the engine run for a few minutes at idle before shutting down AND before heading out for a long trip I A L W A Y S snug down the mainifold retaining bolts to keep it quiet. Sounds dumb, but works.
