454 Chevy won't shift into overdrive Stan Recob 5-26-03
My 1997 Winnebago won't shift into high gear. It keeps going up and down and now is pretty much staying in 3rd gear. Seems like a vacuum problem but I can't find a vacuuum connection. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

What engine do you have?
Re: 454 Chevy won't shift into overdrive Stan 5-28-03
My chassis is the P-30 1996 with a Chevrolet 454 Vortec. Hope that helps. It shifted sporadically and then kind of quit altogether. I really thought it was a vacuum line problem but could only find a vent tube on top of the case. Any ideas?

Stan, I'm sorry, I meant what transmission do you have, not engine. You clearly stated 454, but my mind was tired. Anyway, you could have a problem with the lock up switch that is controlled by the brake pedal. When the switch gets out of adjustment, the trans won't go into lock up, and it feels like you are missing a gear. Look under the dash for the brake light switch, and usually the lock up switch is near it. Make sure they are properly adjusted.

Thanks Joe. I will check that out. I just got back from a trip from Orlando to North Carolina and it didn't do it once!!! Hard to explain. I didn't do as much downshifting as I usually do on the hills and just let the automatic transmission take care of it for the most part. That seemed to work and it always shifted into high gear. Thanks for the reply. I will look into the situation you described.

Joe, I have a similar problem with my
1992 GMC 2500 4x4 6.5 litre diesel and
480LE tran. The shift is hard and will
not go into overdrive. However, when
the mechanic reset the computer, it works fine for 1-2 good drives (50 miles or so). It acted up and again hard shift with no over drive. When the mechanic perform diagnostic on it, no error code (diesel eng ?) but the speed throttle indicate a 30% depressed and will not change even if the gas pedal is pressed down. Once the reset is issued, everything seems normal again. Any suggestion what's the problem?
thanks
