460 ford backfire Eldon 1-17-03
I have a 1994 ford 460 in a motorhome. I installed a new idle air control valve and an oxygen sensor. I then performed the KOEO test and got a 172. I reset the oxygen sensor and got 111's. I then performed the KOEO test and got 111's. The road test was a failure. The engine backfires like crazy. I cannot get over 45 mph. It is not consistant, i.e. it will pull hard up a hill and then start back firing. I expected some driving problems for the first 10 miles, but I haven't driven that far yet. Also, when the vehicle is parked it will rev freely w/o backfire...HELP! gimme a clue

I had a similar problem with a 94 Bounder with a 454 engine. It would run ok, but would occasionaly back fire and could not get over 40 mph. Took it to a chevy dealer and the mechanic discovered that it had a cracked distributor housing. They replaced it and retuned the engine. Runs fine now. Because this was considered an emission problem, it was covered under a 7 yr/ 70,000 mile warranty and no charge to me.

What was your problem in the first place? Why did you replace the parts you mentioned? Is your catalytic convertor possibly failing? Have you done a pressure test on it?

Give us a clue what the "111" fault definition is, and maybe we can help you. You didn't by accident, bump the Distributor Cab, especially the bottom half, they don't seem to sit on there very well, and move easily, knocking it off center, causing the Rotor to brake in the cap, without you knowing it, the instant you turned the key. A broken rotor in the distributor would let it idle, Backfire under a medium load, be ok under a hard load, all because of the way the Vacuum advance works. I don't understand what you mean by "reset the O2 sensor".

Have you idel air control checked
Re: 460 ford backfire jeremy clark 6-16-03
Your problem could be a burnt or bent intake valve causing compression to exit through the intake rather than the exaust
