Slant 8v71 318 engine? Matthew 1-14-03
I have a 1966 GMC tour bus that has a detroit diesel 318 8v71 on a slant. I am trying to find another engine for it, and I was wondering if there is a difference between a slant engine and a regular engine of this series. And can I use the parts off of another engine of the same series on my engine?

Thanks for any help

Matthew

There are major diferences between the two engines, but all the parts will interchange. What is so wrong with your engine that you want to replace it?

Most coach 8V71 engines are left-hand rotation, most truck 8V71 are right hand rotation. You can change cam gears and starter to change rotation, but really, the headache isn't worth it unless you have a fresh truck 8V71 sitting around and your bus 8V71 is dead.

Unless there is catastrophic damage to your existing engine or EVERYTHING on it is shot (flat cams, burned valves, lots of oil in the air box and pistons slapping around), you would probably be better off replacing what is worn. If the engine you have is a lost cause, then you might want to find a transit agency that is auctioning off some of their old busses with the engine you are looking for. These are frequently in very good shape and can be had for around $500. Remove the running gear, stuff the scraps inside the coach and have it hauled off to a recycler.
