454 Chevy Replacement Motor - high oil pressure indicator Barry 9-26-02
I just picked up my 1984 Winny after having a factory-new 454 block replacement. The oil pressure guage always sat around 40 and moved a little higher when the engine was under stress. Now, it sit's around 60 and doesn't move no matter what the speed, RPM's or load on the motor. Is this normal for a new motor?

60 psi is fine for a 454. I have seen them run as high as 80 psi. I would check with the installer to make sure things are connected correctly.

My guess is that you will see the idle pressure moderate a bit as the engine breaks in.

I have a GMPP big block that was installed new and it pegged the oil pressure needle full-time at 60 psi initially. After a few thousand miles it now idles warm at 35-40 psi and jumps to 60 at anything over 1,000 rpm.

But as Joe says, it wouldn't to check that everything had been done right.
