Joe, I took your suggestion and checked my fan/clutch to see if it had siezed. I was able to turn the fan by hand, but noticed some resistance (sort of fluid-like) which prevented it from spinning freely on its own. Is this normal? Or, should the fan spin freely, at least for a half revolution or so. The fan on my '94 Suburban with a small block spins a lot easier than the 454 on my RV. Come to think of it, when I revved the 454 to about the same rpm as it would doing 55/60 on the freeway, I noticed that the fan did continue to spin, keeping up with the rpm (and hence the noise quotient went up as well). This could explain/be the root cause of the loud engine noise at freeway speed. I will heed your advice and swap out the fan clutch to see if it helps. Thanks a bunch. All the best.
Usually on a cold engine when you rev the engine up, the fan will rev with the engine and then in a few seconds you should the fan speed slow down to where you can hardly hear the fan over the engine noise. As you are traveling with the motorhome you will hear the fan cycle in and out as the temperature raises and falls. I try to replace items like this with OEM (GM in this case) parts. It seems that aftermarket fan clutches don't hold up as well as genuine OEM.
