1985 454 how many quarts of engine oil with filter change
All 454 chev. engines are designed to take 7 qts. of oil with filter change. However the 454 has had some problems with dipstick calibrations. To make a correct reading on your dipstick, drain the oil & remove the filter. Install a new filter & add 6 qts of oil. Start engine run about 5 minutes & shut off & allow 10 minutes for the oil to drain down from the heads. Next dipstick the engine about 3 time to get a accurate reading, with a file make a mark at the fluid edge on the dipstick, that will indicate the new "add oil" mark. Next add the 7th qt. of oil & give it time to drain down. Again dipstick the engine about 3 times & make a mark at the fluid edge, this will be your new full mark.
