Engine 8v71 Diesel Mark Anthony 4-22-02
I have fuel trouble.
The fuel drains back in to the tank. I checked for leaks there are none that I know of. The engine is in a MCI9 bus that I am converting to a motor home.Thank you

Are you losing prime? A bad injector can allow compression to get into the fuel system, but if that was the case, the engine would barely run.
Re: Engine 8v71 Diesel Bubba the bus tech 9-13-06
Transverse mount V71 series engines rotate backwards to alow for the V drive Transmsion. 6V71 engines comon on transit style units some 8V71. The 8V71 was in the highway coaches and were called a 318. Most delivered @ 258hp to not over tax the cooling system. The easy way to tell is to look at the ex manifold for how many outlets from the head.
Early units had inline 6-71 engines.
The comon placing for the anti drain back check valve was in the suction side of the fuel system and did tend to fall apart in units with a lot of idle time, you can here them buzz in the tank under correct conditions. Usualy mounted where the flexible line mounts to the coach chassis.

Good Luck

Slant Engine 8v71 Diesel Matthew 1-14-03
I have a 1966 GMC tour bus with a detroit diesel slant 318 8v71. I was wondering if there is any difference engine wise, between a slant 318 and a regular 318. I am looking for a replacement engine.

Re: Engine 8v71 Diesel Gyro 9-30-04
My 8V71 in my 1974 K125 wont fire, the problem started when the jacobs switch on the throttle body was screwed in to far and held the motor at full revs when started, the only way to stop it was to cut off the fuel. Ive replaced fuel filters, pressure bleed the fuel system several times and it still wont fire. Any ideas would help, im going "nuts" it should start. also what is the soliniod looking thind that screws into the side of the throttle body, does it have anything to do with it not firing ?

Re: Slant Engine 8v71 Diesel JD 1-27-03
Matthew, your Detroit can't be 318 c.i.d. if it's 8v71. An 8v71 has 568 c.i.d. - a 318 would be a 6v53. Detroit v-type engines were often mounted canted over in busses to save room. The engine is basically the same, engine mounts and accessory mounts might vary.
