454 Engine looses power at 40 mph Mike 3-30-08
I purchased a 1988 Winn Chieftain 22 with a 454 carb engine. I replaced the plugs, wires, cap, coil and she runs great to about 40 mph. At 40-45 the motor looses power, sputters and back fires until I take my foot off the gas and then it will run up to 40 and do the same thing. The gas is new. I could not find the fuel filter so it has not been replaced. The motor only has 58k on it. I am looking for any help. Also has anyone worked on the wiper assembly?
Thanks

Have the fuel pump checked. I experienced similiar proplems.

Check on the inside of the right (passenger) side frame rail for an inline filter. If its a Quadrajet carb there should also be a filter behind the one inch fuel inlet fitting.

Start with replaceing the filters. They need replaceing anyway and are cheaper than testing the pump. U definitely are starved for fuel.

I have a (new to me) 1989 sunflyer. the first time out it died on every hill in town. I waited and let it idle and it e\went good for about a half block (until the carb bowl went dry).
I replace the engine fuel pump, carb filter and in-line filter (about half way back with 1/2" line in and out. It seemd fixed for the first 100 miloes then did the same thing. I put an electric in line fuel pump on it and it didn't help. I was 200 miles from home. Finally, I thought about the third line on the fuel pump. It is a return line to the tank. I pinched it off and drove home fine.
I am sure I have a problem with the tank fuel pume, component or filter sock. But, I wanted to say what I did in a pinch.
