4L80E Transmission Problems Bob 9-27-07
I have a 1995 GMC 2500 4x4 with 155K. Bought it w/ a bad trans. Found it 2 1/2 qts low on oil. I put in the oil, and did get some forward movement from her, but oil is starting to look brown. Is it terminal?

Also, I found a low milage used 4l80e trans from a 1995 3500 w/ a 7.4 liter big block 4x4. Is this a direct fit? Should I do any shift kit upgrades, I hear the OEM needs improving.....

I have a 2003 HD Chevy pick up 2500 series with 40,000 miles. The transmission is toast and is very expensive to fix. Have you heard of any problems with the 480EL transmission?
Re: 4L80E Transmission Problems Den 12-29-07
Have a 97 Gm Pickup, and access to scan tool. 4L80E Trans. has 2nd gear and reverse only. The trans.starts in 2nd gear and will not shift higher or lower.Changed the ignition switch/wiring harness assembly,no difference.TPS checks out OK.....and what happened after this is puzzling.

I went under the truck and disconnected the large round multi-pin wiring harness at left rear of transmission,re-connected it, test drove the truck and trans. started in 1st and went through all the shifts normally and to O.D. Thought I had it, but after a few blocks it went back to 2nd gear only.Tried disconnect and connect again of harness, shifted Ok for a few blocks... and then back to 2nd gear only again.
This is definetely an electrical problem. From the beginning we have noticed the orange engine service light does not come on every time the key is switched from off to on... and it should. Gm trans. Tech told me the ECM for those model years are not a problem. Has anyone encountered this type of trans.issue with the 4L80E?

1996 GMC Suburban CK2500 Automatic, 4WD, 454V8. Transmission is dropping out of reverse gear hard when backing out of a slightly sloped driveway. Usually will not pop out if backing up on a level surface. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Check to make sure you got the right oil in the tranny, I run in one which had motor oil put in & would not shift at all, change the oil & flush the convertor, cooler, line & work good now. It's going to cost you 12 quarts of oil & time to do it to know but may save 1K.

Re: 4L80E Transmission Problems BUBBA THE BUS TECH 9-27-07
The "E" transmissions change quite rapidly and this trans may by a direct bolt in but the wiring may not due to possible changes. Need to check with a wrecker that is willing to look this up in his will fit cross refrence. A big block trans may have minor difrences such as lower stall converter etc. As to upgrades, I belive a "shift kit" Or " Reprogram kit" can help get the trany to survive. Unless you are racing going to any more agressive than stage 1 or mild is a waste. Good Luck.

I have a 1992 chevy 2wd single cab dually..
supposed to be service truck but 6.2 diesel had messed up injectors so threw out motor and replaced with an 80' model 350 motor...using HEI...
my trans is a 4L80E and i was wondering if there is a switch that controls shifting on the motor...like an idle sensor....the truck can move forward and back yet does not shift at all...wondering if i disconnected any vital wires...left all wiring on trans intact but not sure if i unplugged one from the original motor...any input greatly appreciated....
Re: 4L80E Transmission Problems Chuck harkey 8-18-08
I have a chevy 2000 express 3/4 ton, the 1st problem, at 32000,miles trans, would slam or bang when shifting & while driving it seened like it was in 2nd or 3rd I had it checked out, oil & trans, checked ok. I took a trip & it started again, then I was goin up a steep grade, I lost over drive and reverse. now when trying reverse it will go into gear, but it makes strange noise then all the sudden goes into reverse gear after a few seconds, this happens mostly when trying to back out when on a sloap. over drive has same problem like its not goin all the way into gear, I can drive in 3,2,1 with no problemsat all?

Re: 4L80E Transmission Problems Rick McCutchan 11-18-08
Yep, had the exact same problem with about an 01 pickup at work. 2nd gear only, fiddle with the wiring and it would go away...for a day, a month, whatever, but would always come back. Finally traced it to the bulkhead connector. So every time it did it we'd take it apart, try cleaning though it always looked good, treak the terminals a little, think we would have it and it would work for a while. Finally got sick of it coming back every month or so and just pulled the 2 wires out and permanently connected them externally. Don't like doing things that way but we were fed up. It's the red or bright pink (as I remember) power wire to the thans. roughly in the center of the connector. When it would break the circuit the trans would just default to 2nd gear.
Re: 4L80E Transmission Problems Den 1-2-08
PROBLEM
I found the problem with the 4L80E transmission staying in 2nd gear only in my 1997 GM pickup.

ANSWER
Removed trans. oil pan.As the shift solenoids require a ground signal to complete the circuit via the trans.ECM, I checked for a power supply (12V) to both solenoids and found none. The 10amp fuse for the trans. was OK.I then checked for continuity between the 12V supply wire (pink) and the end that plugs into solenoid with my meter...no conninuity. I then realized there must be an open in the circuit, and most likely at the firewall junction point.I was not going to spend all day disassembling that component.

Therefor,I cut the old dead (pink)12V supply wire and ran a new wire from the "E" pin of the 20 pin harness that plugs into the left side rear of trans. and routed it through the GM trans.split loom harness (very difficult)up and through the firewall to the factory 10 amp trans. fuse wire which I cut 1.5" away from the fuse box and soldered both ends.

The transmission now gets its 12volt power supply as it did before when the key is switched to the run position and the trans.ECM provides the ground signal for shifting each solenoid. Trans.now shifts perfectly once again.

Commentary
As a Lisenced mechanic I am once again disappointed with the quality of electrical workmanship in this vehicle. This truck belongs to my Dad,he bought it new and has only 35,000 miles on it in 10 years and always looks after it.
Re: 4L80E Transmission Problems dave 7-15-08
My 1995 gmc has a 4l80e trans also and it stuck in second gear.
there is a round plug on the drivers side of the transmission it controls the shift solenoids. all that was wrong with mine was a dirty connection at the plug it shifts fine now.
try this.
