Re: 4l80e Transmission problems by Russ
Post New Message I have a 99 4L80e on a motor home with 49,000 miles. On a long trip, tranny stopped shifting into OD. At home next day, after unit had cooled, OD worked fine again.

I decided to have the fluid and filter changed. Nothing found in the pan, but filter was very dirty. I got a fluid flush to get as much fresh fluid as I could in the tranny.

Shifting did improve and was very happy until I tried to back up. Reverse was almost non existant.

Since forward was working so well, I decided on a short trip (no backing) and see if circulating fluid would help.

Upon return, I had a slightly stronger reverse. So another trip, slightly longer. Well three trips later, I have reverse working fairly well again. My next step is back to the trans shop for another fluid flush and filter replacement.

I "think" my probelm was dirt in the tranny that clogged the filter. During flush, some of the old stuff got into the reverse part of the system. Now that both forward and reverse are working as they should, I want to get one more flush. The first helped greatly and figure the second can't hurt and might get me back to fully functional.

Don't know if this is of any help to you, but it's all I have to offer.
