GMC/Ward Gearing for Highway Dod 6-13-01
I am interested in using my '79 GMC/Ward Automatic 11 passenger bus to do some traveling.
The gearing is too low so I am looking into the following three options:
1. Change transmission
2. Add overdrive unit
3. Replace differential gears.

Any opinions or insight?

The rear end has 10 bolts in a circular pattern with the driveshaft offset towards the passeneger side.
The cover also has "699" cast into it.
When I jack up one wheel, the driveshaft rotates about 6.2 times.
Can anyone provide info on what kind of rear end I have and what other gears sets are available?
Also what would be a ballpark estimate on changing the gears?

Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Re: GMC/Ward Gearing for Highway FAST FRED 6-14-01
The lowest cost method is usually to find a complete rear from the boneyard , with a much better ratio and install it.

IF you can find a 2 speed , you might get lucky and have a highway cruser , that can handle rough dirt roads too.

Cost of thr rear isnt too high but good mechanics dont come cheap.

I would suggest the local truck spring rebuilders as they have most experience with this.
