School bus conv. transmission help! Dominic Svornich 7-30-08
If anybody can help me with an idea on this, I'd really appreciate it!! I bought a school bus recently. It's a 1980 Ford chassis, Carpenter built 34-passenger with an automatic Allison AT-540 4-sp. The owner said he hadn't had any transmission problems in it, but it hadn't been driven out of town for quite a while (probably never made it to 4th). Driving it home, after about an hour on the highway, starting from a stop, it wouldn't shift past third gear. After I let is cool down for about 25 minutes, it worked fine for another 50 miles or so, then wouldn't shift out of first. At first it would if I manually changed the selector back, then not at all. I let it sit for an hour, and it was fine again, but only for another 50 miles or so. I put a quart of Trans-X in yesterday and tried driving it again, and it was fine again for about 40 miles then wouldn't shift out of 3rd, then 2nd, then 1st. Is there anything else I can try without ripping apart the transmission?? I can't see any loose sensors or wires... thanks for any help you can give me

It sounds like the filter is plugging off. But that is a guess. Drop the pan and check it. If it is it most likely has bad things going on inside and needs a mojor repair. Good Luck

New filter, fluids(jacobs oil), and seal then see how she acts. Ensure you have some way to drain the torque converter to get all the old oil out.

I bought an 1980 Winny from a guy who had just changed all the fluids. Guess what? Oil was blacker than I had ever seen.
