A common phrase here is "I've been bitten by the bus bug." Well that describes me perfectly. I've gotten to where I can't sleep at night!
I have a conversion project in mind and I've decided on an either an MCI MC12 or 102A3 for the shell. Both are in my price range and I have a local source on each. Is the extra width in the 102A3 worth the extra $$?
I need a day coach (entire floor plan is a lounge) for a large group of family and friends. Because it's just a big lounge area, I don't need to mess with plumbing and holding tanks or extensive cabinetry.
I'm wondering if I should eliminate the existing lavatory or if I can integrate it into the layout? If I were to keep it, I'd probably make the rear three or four feet into a small galley and closet area. Plus it would be a buffer zone from engine noise. Any recommendations?
I'd like to avoid the big expense of an integrated generator. Will inverters be able to handle the load of four or five flat panel TVs and interior lighting? Can I just add a 110V system that is powered by the 24V system? (with the engine running of course)
Should I concern myself with extra insulation? Can I use the on-board HVAC since there will be no living quarters and passengers will only be present while in motion?
Seating will be commercial grade lounge couches around the perimeter (properly secured) atop 'Pergo' wood flooring. I was surprised at how stylish and affordable this can be and it's more durable than RV furniture.
I envision just removing the coach seats, re-covering the surfaces, adding some electrical and PRESTO-new coach ready to go! Of course "PRESTO" is a little over-simplified. I know all too well that the devil is in the details, which is why I’m here!
I've done extensive homework on chassis pros and cons, drive trains and their life spans, and I think I've visited every conversion website in the universe. With much of my preliminary research done, I'm ready to take the dive and get started.
I've operated several different RVs and an MC9 over the years but I've never personally purchased, owned, built, or maintained a rig like this. I've already explored licensing, registration, and insurance issues and that's handled.
What am I missing? Am I in over my head? Any thoughts or insights would be helpful.
Oh, and I need to do this for $50,000 or less!! Looking forward to your comments. |
