Wanted: short transit bus NOW! :-) newbusser 6-5-05
Hi, I am looking to buy a transit bus approximately 25-30' long for a makeshift camper. It should be in driveable condition, preferably good. GVWR 26,000 pounds or less. Preferably on the east coast, mid-atlantic region.
Any hints appreciated!

If you're worried about going over the 26,000lb gvw on a motorhome because of your license, don't. It doesn't apply-only to commercial applications. Unless the Vehicle Code for your state says different. But in Calif, it says that a class C can drive up to a 3 axle house car. No mention on weight rating.
As far as size, if you go up to 35ft, you'll have a bunch of buses to choose from for around the $5000 or less mark. Course, the smaller ones, are just built on small chassis. But if you want a truly heavy duty bus, use the 35ft with a Detroit 6V-92TA, Series 50, Cummins ISM in it. It'll last years. Good Luck, TomC

A follow up-go to WWW.transitsales.com/inventory and see the range of transits you can get for cheap. The RTS's and Gilligs will do you good. Good Luck, TomC

A quick correction to Tom's post, you can drive up to 40' not 35' if it's registered as RV without a special lisence.

This Spring, I bought two 1995 BlueBird 29' Q-Busses - diesel pushers E/W Cummins engine, air ride suspension, retarder, and Allison four speed AT. I am converting one and the other is for sale for $6,500. It's a sound buss ready for conversion. I'll be glad to share with you the plans for my project.

Check EBAY !!!! NEVER pay more than 3k for a used transit... or your getting taken.. still not as bad as a rip off as transitsales.com though !!!
