Drivers license requirement? Doug Peterson 4-19-05
My wife and I are interested in purchasing a converted bus. Are there any drivers license requirements like a CDL?

Thank you

At least in Calif, the law reads that with a normal Class C license you may drive up to a 3 axle house car AND pull either a 10,000lb standard tongue trailer or 15,000lb fifth wheel/goose neck trailer. But other states are getting a little testy about the big rigs. The smart thing to do is to get a Non-Commercial Class A license that has to do with weight laws. All you have to do is to take the Class A Non-Commercial test and to have a physical exam that applies to the license and carry the medical card with you. No driving test is required. Good Luck, TomC

If it has an air brake system, an air brake endorsement is required. Any CDL is state issued, but all follow federal guidelines which are very specific as to which one you need. A phone call to your local DMV should handle it. If you doubt their intelligence, just stop by a licensing office and pick up a CDL booklet (usually free), and it will spell it out for you. As to states getting touchy about what folks are hauling, I've been hearing about problems with ports of entry, weigh stations etc getting picky about folks with one ton pickups pulling goosenecks for hire doing hot shot work without a DOT number and carrier authority. Good luck.

Can I drive a 42 ft Motorhome with a regular license or is there a special license for that. Under 40 ft I've heard that you can drive it with a regular drivers license. Could you help clear this up for me.
Thanks
