Transit city bus speed Mike H 6-25-99
I am thinking about buying A 1976 GMC T6H-4523A transit city bus. It has A 6-cyl detroit diesel and A two speed automatic transmission. I was told that top speed on this bus is about 50 mph. I would like to know what it would take to make this bus capable of highway speeds. Could I get more speed by changing the gear ratio in the differental? Thanks, Mike.
Re: transit city bus speed Geoff 6-27-99
You could change the rear end for more speed but it would cost you as much as that bus is worth. If I were you I would look for a newer transit bus, like a Gillig Phantom or RTS, with a 6V92TA, V730/740 trans. These buses are geared higher and have more power. Prices are not that much either--start at $4,000 for a more modern bus.

The engine and transmission is probably a 6V71 non-turbo with a VS-2 tranny. I think they could make about 55 to 62 mph. The Later buses with a 6V92T and V-730 tranny such as the RTS and other transits usually are geared for 62 mph but also have the horsepower to run with a gear change to 72+ mph. ( 4.11 or lower ratio )

Good Luck...

I have a 1976 GMC4523 N that I converted about 3 years a go. It runs 54 MPH it slows on hills but gets me where I'am going. The vs tranny is a little slow at the start. I have just purchased 2 1981 GMC's they have 6V71 and a v 730 3 speed tranny. This tranny makes it drive like a car. just step on the gas and you have a ton of power. I'am going to put the tranny out of one in my bus and sell the other. I'am asking 1500.00 for the whole bus v730's sell for around 1200.00 you can drive this home. I'am in Maine.

Hello.. I have two fishbowls that have the number T6H 4235A (I think) and they have the center isleway seating like an intercity but with lowbacks. I have been told that they do about 65 with the gov set at 2200 RPM if that is the case and I think it is the same bus you are looking at you could go with a 3,11 I think ,have to look at the old brochures on that model to find out what gearing was offered, but I think it was from 5.0 to about 3.1 I think anyway. If you get it higher than what you have then I would say you can go as fast as the greyhounds can,, there is enough engine because there a few suburbans that are 35' long and have the highway gearing. I wouldn't pay more than 500.00 for that bus and I would not EVER!!!!! pay more than 5000.00 for ANY transit unless it was a total rehab and was built in the 90s. but I would spend 100.000.00 on a mid 90s Prevost. Mike.
Re: transit city bus speed Wulf P. Ward 10-29-99
Why would anybody convert a GMC or any transit that old. It takes more time and more money then doing something a little newer. When I hear on the net about what someone is doing makes me scratch my head. I also made the mistake by spending $ 100,000.00 on an RTS, but it helped me sell 140 buses and I really like the RTS. You could change the rear end for more speed but it would cost you as much as that bus is worth.
