Chance RT-52 bus - good conversion? Jim Gardner 11-10-01
Hi, I'd like to find a short bus for motorhome conversion. The Chance RT-52, at 26 feet, seems like a good choice. So far, I haven't seen this bus mentioned here at all. Would appreciate any advice on this or other small buses for conversion.
Thanks, Jim

I suppose the reason why so few address the shorter buses is most people are looking for larger spaces than a 26' bus.

The cost of operating a smaller bus is ususally insignificantly different from the large buses.

The question you have to ask yourself is why do you want a short bus?

If the answer is so you can get in and out of really small and challenging spaces or to get off the beaten track, you might be better served with converting a school bus. Most school buses have higher ground clearances, steeper approach and departure angles, and they can usually be purchased for a lot less $$$ than any transit or highway coach.

With enough time, money, and effort you can convert almost anything.

Good luck and happy trails.

: Mark, thanks for the reply. Right now, I'm full-timing in a 19' Chinook class B motorhome, in the middle of San Francisco. I'd love to have more room, a stronger engine and a much more stable platform, but a 40 footer would be a bit unwieldy (and conspicuous). I'd love to be able to tow my small pickup, and also to be able to mount a motorcycle rack on the back. As far as space is concerned, I'd like to have a permanent bed across the back, more storage, and a more open feel to the remaining space. The RT-52 seems beefy enough for a conversion and is (I think) spacious enough for my needs. I also like the fact that the entire length of the bus represents useable interior space. I will be driving it daily, and need access to some tight spaces.

I've just started investigating buses, and the RT-52 is the only one I've seen that is readily available, under 30' long, and doesn't have 6' of hood out front.

Should I be looking at anything else?

Thanks again,
Jim Gardner

Hi Jim,

Looks like a nice little conversion candidate for city dweller. Air ride, air brakes, diesel engine, etc. I don't know what parts and service are like for that Cummins, but it sounds good from the Web site. One thing to consider is that it looks, from the floor plan, that your usable space really starts behind the driver, though, due to front engine. Also take away entry area space becasue you need that for steps. Still leaves a fair bit of room to play with though. Would be much roomier than a 20ft Class C. . . Best of luck with it. Keep us posted on your plans.
