Hi folks,
We have just bought a fabulous old skoolie, a 1955 GMC hydra-matic, she has an original 302 straight six engine and had been sitting for some years, needless to say there are some seals and gaskets to replace, ie rear main seal, which is a string seal, does anyone have any input on these old 302 engines? We are eager to move on to Vancouver BC from our present location in northern California, sincereley,Garyth & Ashley
My experiance is with Ford more than GM, but there are some basics that apply to any motor.
If the motor has sat for several months to a year or so, it's very important that the oil is changed at least twice in the first few hours of operation. The first change is best *BEFORE* the engine is started again. The second should be after about 10 to 20 hours of operation or 50 to 100 miles. This gets all the gunk and garbage out of the passages that accumulated while the motor was sitting. After driving around for 100 to 200 miles, all fluids should be changed (axles, trans, antifreeze, etc.). It would be a good idea to clean some engine and trans surfaces off and check for leaks. Now would be a good time to replace all the tune up parts if you haven't done so to start it. I'd also recommend pressure testing the cooling system; this will point out anything nasty like a leaky radiator or heater core or leak in the head gasket or water pump.
