Building truck camper into bus conversion babalu 7-22-04
We have a truck camper we can't sell and is creating problems for us hauling it and a horse trailer. We are vey budget conscious on fuel costs, etc. If we found a used diesel bus or even better a small diesel handicap tram as used by some cities, could we just cut out part of the top and weld/fasten that truck camper in it so we have everything, kitchen, complete bathroom ready to go? Any extra space, if there is any would come in handy for hauling tack or extra living space. We want to go to equestrian parks mostly. We want to make it as easy on ourselves as possible.

The question isn't "Can it be done?" but rather "Do you really want to do that?"

From what you are suggesting to do, there is no "easy" about it. If diesel is your choice of fuel, why don't you sell the truck *AND* the camper as a unit and get a newer diesel truck? You could even convert your existing truck to diesel and spend a lot less time and aggrievation than welding the camper body to an old bus or tram.

I'd suggest making a list of wants and needs and starting from that point to make a decision. what you're asking to do is going to cause more problems than you want to solve.

Hope that helps!

An ideal truck for your conversion would be a Ford E350 "cutaway" with a 8' wide body. You could remove the body roof and 1/2 of the sides and have a little space left on the back for storage compartments on each side.
Check the weight of your camper first, as the 350 dosen't carry as much weight as you might think.
