Bought IHC short Bus, a few questions jay 7-9-04
Hello, a couple of friends and myself purchased a 1988 IHC bus short bus with Thomas body. I belive i has a 7.2L desiel engine with allison transmission and eaton rear end. It has 180k miles on it. It seems other people have this problem as well, going to slow. I read where the engine is to small for long buses but for short ones it should be ok. I would like to be able to go faster, some of the trips we will take are 500 miles away, going 55 seems to slow. What is the best option for increasing speed? Changing the gears in the rear end? Changing the transmission? Anyone done this before or have advice i would appriciate it.

Also, what things should I look for in maintaining it, anything wrong with this engine?

Thanks

Make sure the road speed governor is not still connected. Most schools systems govern the speed up to 55MPH.

Yeah, they told us the disconnected it when we got it. I found the rear end ratio it was 6.3 something like that. They told us it was geared low for the mountains. We were thinking about trying to go to a 4.11 rear end. Do you guys think that willl work?

Just rember you will not have the same power from a stop. It will be like starting in 2nd instead of 1st.
