Re: 1976 chevrolet school bus with 350ci by John
Post New Message You are asking for major trouble to get a bus whose air tanks/compressor has a leak and won;t hold air pressure...not to even talk about that low-powered 350 cid engine. My advie is to keep looking for another bus...they are out there, and available for around $1,000 or slightly more in GOOD condition.

The 350 Chevy/GM engine has a 3.48 inch stoke...that is just too short to develep much torque..and this engine is not know as a torque engine even when it comes in passenger cars and light trucks. The reason to be concerned about torque production in a bus is that most of them weigh around 8 to 10 tons, empty, or perhaps even higher. To get that much weight moving in a satisfactory manner, and to go up any sort of grade, calls for massive torque production...well beyond the capabilities of the 350 Chevy/GM engine, irrespecitive of the tranny/axle gears you may come up with.
