Hi, I'm a college student at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities who bought a 1981 Ford/Carpenter school bus last summer out of Rochester, and turned it into a party/tailgate/camp vehicle. It's not a full camper, but it's been carpeted, taped and sprayed, and furnished. I have a problem; when I first bought the bus, I noticed that the rear differential had a minor leak at the front seal. I added gear-lube, but I overfilled it. Once I got the bus up and running again, it whipped oil all over the under-chassis. I'm wondering if I can take the yoke out myself and replace that front seal, or if I have to take it in to have it looked at. It has an Eaton 2-speed rear end.
Yep easy, undo joint, uncrew the nut in the middle of the yoke(you will need big pipewrench & a 3/4" breaker bar & probably a 1 1/2" 3/4" drive socket, & a torque wrench to retorque at the right torque.
When removing the seal, you have to carefull not to loose or leave the seal spring there, if it goe in the bearing it will be very expensive.
