My friends and I are the owers of a short school bus. Approx. 15 " from back of driver to back of bus. Among a million other things, we feel some sort of bathroom facility is necessary. I would like suggestions of possible simple/reasonably priced yet effective solultions. More than a five gallon bucket but les than adding an outside tank for running water.
We put a toilet in ours. All the stuff ya need is easy to come by at an RV supply center. Our toilet cost $150 and you can buy custom sized gray-tanks that fit perfictly between the frame and side of the bus (ours was 80 bucks). Then you need a demand pump (around 50 bucks), some water line and a small water tank.
The RV toilets only use a few pints of water to flush and a five gallon tank is enough if you are hurt for space.

Some sites have information on "humanure". I think one of their tricks would work pretty good for a bus. They use a 5 gal bucket lined with a heavy plastic bag with a couple of inches of cedar sawdust or shavings (like for dog bedding) in the bottom, and then after every use, add another scoop of cedar sawdust. They claim no smell, and just tie the bag and dump it when about half full. They use a toilet seat screwed to another 5 gal bucket ring as a seat. I think this would work pretty good for anyone except the more fastidious species (women).
Thetford makes a decent flushable porta-potti. My wife and I used one of these for a year on our last conversion.
The bottom section (which holds several gallons) is the blackwater tank. The top section holds fresh water for flushing. It detaches from the bottom and has a cover - you carry it outside and dump it into the RV septic hookup.
