Re: IHC with a DT466 David 3-13-04
The International with the DT466 is an excellent bus. From what I've heard from users and dealers, the DT466 is top of the line. It is superior in performance and reliability. They are built to last.

The diesels get better mileage than the gas engines and are reliable.

Jonothan,

The DT466 is a turbo-charged International diesel engine. As David said they have a reputation for being very good engines and quite long-lived. I have that eninge in my 1979 International Blue Bird bus coupled to an Allison MT645 4-speed automatic. I drove the bus home to western Washington from Denver and held 55 mph (top speed with the present rear-end is 60) up every pass (except the last 1.5 miles of Lookout; the speed dropped to 48mph); there's a lot of power there. Mine is set for 180hp and could be reset for up to 230hp.

HTH....Les Lampman

The DT-466 is a very good engine i have a 1985International/thomas with the turbo charged 466 i get about 14 miles to a gallon its not bad for a full size schoolbus its coupled to a T-35 5 speed manual transmision. i can cruise at 70mph with it with the original rear axle and gears. it was used mostly for charter trips so it has under 200,000 miles on it.
