Skoolie door mods SchmooozerPrime 10-26-03
My "new" skoolie has the standard government grade door mechanism to open the door without getting out of the drivers seat. In it's new life I'm not too worried about this and I'd like to remove this setup to make room for an pod that will house radio, backup display etc.. Does anyone know of any alternate door mechanism (store bought or home built) that leaves the center of the dash open??
Re: Skoolie door mods John Benstock 11-2-03
Sorry I can't help you with the mod, but if you do manage to do it, perhaps you can help me. I'm looking for door handle parts for a 1970 Bluebird school bus, body # F 013078, mfg. date 1971, factory service # 111256,although parts from newer style buses would probably fit. If not still possible, any suggestions whom I could contact who might have them?

Thanks for your help, good luck with your project.

I am not sure exactly what you are asking about door control modifications.

The easiest modification is to scrap the factory door and door control. In its place, fabricate a single leaf door that opens and closes with a door knob. You won't be able to open and close the door from the driver's seat but if you are converting your bus into an RV, that shouldn't be a concern.

If you still want to be able to open and close the door from the driver's seat, you will need to convert the factory manual door to a power operated door. Electric, vacuum, and air operated systems are available.

If you have a Blue Bird, Thomas, or Ward/AmTrans/IC bus the systems would be available for retrofit from your local bus body dealer. If you don't have a bus body built by one of those companies you may be SOL.

Good luck.

Hi John,

What parts are you looking for? I've got a 1979 Blue Bird and may have what you need?

Dear Les Lampman,
Thanks for writing back. I’m looking for the door handle; 2 chrome horizontal levers; surrounding cover which attaches to dashboard and around which handle pivots, and including the spring-loaded electric switch inside the cover, which controls the red wig-wag warning lights; and possibly the long rod which connects the handle to the door; all which could fit a 1970 Bluebird bus. I’m new to the RV site, so please jot me an e-mail (mrbenstock@hotmail.com), which I am much more likely to get. Also, I can give you a fuller description and send you a photo of what I am describing. Thanks for all your help! Look forward to hearing from you.
