We're considering buying a school bus and converting it for gamedays at the university. Does anyone have experience with this type of conversion and if so, what kind of cost might we be looking at? We're interested in the tailgating and not necessarily for sleeping. TIA.
First, if you leave the bus seated for 16 or more people, including the driver, you will need a CDL with a passenger endorsement to drive the bus.
Second, if the bus requires a CDL, in order to operate the bus you will need to apply for and prominently display your USDOT number.
Third, if the bus requires a CDL, your personal car insurance carrier won't touch your bus for anything or any reason. Think commercial bus insurance to the tune or $1000.00 per month. If your bus is owned by some sort of non-profit group like a church or youth association, you might be able to carry the bus under the group's umbrella liability coverage.
All three points can be eliminated if the bus is converted to RV use. In most states that means the seating has to be removed and some amount of RV stuff installed. A bed, toilet, and kitchen are usually minimums required to re-classify your bus as an RV. In some states it also requires changing the outside color from national school bus chrome yellow to any other color.

It's still a bus but not a state bus so we can't have open containers unless we seal off the driver's area so nothing could be passed to him/me. We will likely add plumbing soon so we can convert it to an RV. Running water is all that is needed for that in OK.
