35 passenger IHC 7.3 Diesel auto Gas mileage? Redd 9-5-03
Does anyone know anything about these busses? I'm interested in buy an early 90's or late 80's bus like described in the subject. I have a few questions. Does anyone have any idea of what kind of MPG I can expect with this bus driven mostly on the interstate? Is this a good engine? How long is the bus and how much does it weigh? I've heard this engine is cabable of 9 mpg with a full sized bus. I figure I could get better gas mileage with a shorter/lighter bus. Thanks in advance for the help.

Diesel is the way to go. My '90 66 psngr Blue Bird has an 8.2 litre turbodiesel. It weights 16,000 lbs, and gets 10 mpg average at 65 mpg. If I go 69, it gets 9 mpg. If I slow down to 57 or so, it gets up to 13.5 miles per gallon. You can expect a gasoline engine on a similar-sized vehicle to get 3.5 to 4.5 at the best.

From everything I've seen they'll get the same mileage..@ 7-10 depending how heavy might be less.

You do not want to consider any full size bus with the 6.9/7.3/Powerstroke engine in it.

The engine is a great engine when it is in a mini bus or a pick-up. In a full size bus, even a shorty full size bus, there is more bus than engine.

In my mini buses with the 7.3L I am happy to get 10-12 MPG. We are running 10-12K lbs most of the time. That translates to around 40-50 MPH on 7% grades.

Increase the weight and frontal area and you will decrease your speed and your MPG. The Powerstroke, due in large part to the turbo, will do a little better but it still will be in the slow lane on the hills.

The other problem with the small engine is it will most probably have the small transmission as well.

If you want a good power package combination in an IHC bus, look for a DT466/MT645. Even in a full size bus you can gear it to go 60-65 MPH, a speed it will be able to maintain on almost any hill while still turning in 7-10 MPG.

Good luck and happy trails.
