CUTTING THROUGH FLOOR OF BUS. KEN 2-2-03
I AM AT THE POINT OF INSTALLING PLUMBING, DRAIN, AND GAS LINES THROUGH THE FLOOR OF MY BUS. IT IS STEEL COVERED WITH BLACK RUBBER. ARE THERE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO CUT THROUGH THE FLOOR? DO I USE METAL CUTTING HOLE SAWS, OR A TORCH, OR WHAT? ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

I put a toilet in my bus. I went under the bus and found a spot between the floor supports and drilled a hole with a large bit in the center of where I whanted the pipe to go. Then using a template, I just used a standard jigsaw with a metal cutting blade and went to town on it. It was actually very easy and only took a a minute or two to finish.

All the buses ive ever converted have been road coaches to start with but the way your explaining the floor it sounds the same. I always used a hole saw or something in that nature, but i always tryed not to make too big of a hole. I like to find a bit as close to the size of pipe as possible and then i would spray that foam around the pipe after installation to keep down road noise and weather. A torch would be a little hairy too use with that rubbler... good luck....i hope i could be of some help

If the pipe is going to be a large one, i would use a large drill bit to cut a start hole. I would then use a sawzall to make the hole bigger.

Great ideas! A torch will not get you a very neat hole so I would agree on drilling. Go to your local Home Depot, Lowes (or whatever in your area)and take a look at rubber grommets. These come in many sizes and fit over your sharp metal edges to protect whatever tubing, wires and such that go through. The expanding foam previously mentioned is a good method as well - especially for larger holes

You say your floor is rubber and metal.

Most people have, or put down some plywood or some other type of flooring to act as insulation and sound deadner. We have carpet over jute backing over rubber over plywood. It sort of works! A young couple down the street tore out the rubber and plywood and put down 2X2's, insulation, and plywood for their flooring. They had an exmilitary Thomas that has a higher than normal ceiling.

I use hole saws or drills BTW.
