How much is this baby worth? Bill Prince 6-9-02
A friend has reached the time where he can no longer drive his school bus.

It's a 1959 Ford-chassis, Wayne-body school bus (19 ft). Conversion was finished in 1993 (I think). He completely stripped the whole thing, then replaced the straight 6 with a late model (6 liter?) diesel V8, plus a C6 transmission. He also replaced the original 611 rear end with a 411 for better freeway-cruise.

The wiring was replaced 100%, the dash is brushed stainless, the seats are custom orthopedic (2). It has custom mag wheels and radial tires. Cabinetry is custom birch. Also has sink, stove, and so on (big bed in the back). The exterior was done in a rich dark-blue Imron.

We're trying to find out what this is worth on the open market. He has something on the order of $80K invested in this one-of-a-kind vehicle. Any ideas, or better yet where can we find out?

Thanks!

If it's a dognose, I.E. conventional bus... kd5kfl 6-9-02
With a hood up front like a conventional truck: Not Much.

Dognoses suffer from a "Hippy bus" stigma. Despite the fact that all the hippies have become stockbrokers and arms dealers by now. Not welcome in many RV parks.

Bill,
this bus is a part time camper and not a full bus conversion. tell your friend that next time he invests $80,000 not to forget a toilet, generator, air conditioner and refriderator. As far as value if you compare your asking price to what else can be had you will soon learn what your up against. 19 ft. long is barely enough room for anything, maybe a lone hippie into classic buses is the way to market it but most people like room for family and friends. 30+ years newer buses of the same size can offer better mpg and security for about the same price. I've got a complete 1965 Ford F600 with Wayne coach...8 rows of undamaged seats.

It begs to be converted or used as a group tour bus.

It has a ladder going up the round rear end up to a 3/4 length luggage area.

4speed + 2speed rear end. good brakes, tires...needs attention only to the brake and turn signal lights. Otherwise runs good.

No one can argue with the nice conversion job, however not many want to draw attention to a unique bus. the problem is a flood of newer buses that sell for less and offer more. most people want to blend in and not stand out. a bus that is not welcomed in many parks, and gets stoped by gaukin cops can be a drag if pulled over at an "incovient" time. another problem is the door does not secure and most people add an easily cut pad lock. mines been robed nine times. i recently replaced it with a converted van shuttle bus, nice to dive newer technology and get parts off a shelf.

Not all of them. Open your eyes; look around. We might not wearing love beads, or have long hair (I still do) but we are out there.

That's actually how it all got started. He'd always wanted to convert a little old school bus, and this was the project. It's quite a site to see. It draws a crowd everywhere it goes. He even gets pulled over occasionally by troopers (or sheriffs) just so they can ogle it. If I could I would attach a photo of it here.
