Power or Overhaul? David G 5-20-02
How does one tell if an engine overhaul is required? I have a 1975 Detroit 6n71 pancake. Starts easily and seems to run well (? - how would I know).
Smokes alot when start up cold. Not so much when warm. The first three fuel fills required about a gallon of oil per 500 miles. Yesterday I filled at 540 miles but no oil was required (? - was on a slight incline - I'll check again on the level). There are 245,000 miles on the speedo.
Also - how could I tell if I have enough power to handle higher speed rear end gears? I understand a vacuum guage on a gas engine would indicate the work being done to maintain speed. How would you tell on a diesel? On the level she governs out at about 65 mph in 5th gear. But it doesn't seem like it is working very hard and if I had a 6 th gear would it just govern out at some higher speed?
Thanks
