Used Mini-bus advice Scott Stewart 4-30-02
Hello friends,
My name is Scott Stewart. My fiance and I will be looking to buy ourselves a miniature school bus in the near future. There's a local auction that we'll be attending where we hope to secure our 20 pass. bus. Our plan is to run the diesel engine on biodiesel and vegetable oil as we tour the US and Mexico, educating people about this wonderfully sustainable alternative to diesel fuel.
The buses we will be auctioning for are used and generally have about 100,000 miles on them (give or take 20,000). I'm wondering if you can give us any advice about what to look for when purchasing a used bus. Are there particular quirks that we should check for? The buses are of numerous makes, models, and years. Also, we won't have the opportunity to have a mechanic evaluate the bus before purchasing it. Any advice you can slide our way would be greatly appreciated. And, of course, we'd be happy to send you pictures one we give the bus our "personal touch."

Happy Trails,
Scott Stewart

Hello friends,
Hey Scott
Good luck on the travels
Checking out used buses..hope you like the color tangelo and black. you are going to see lots of it.
look for maintenance records. most have them by law. look for repair trends like front right wheel bearings, breaks...fr tires get a beating on curbs.. frequent oil changes, accidents..recent work..my bus had 2000 miles on a new clutch, brakes, winshield, radiator ...to pass an inspection then retired. Check things like driveshafts for wobble, the body should be straight, most of the electrics should work. Run the bus up to temp. check the heaters. Expect to have at least something wrong.
Don't waste time on "new" looking retread tires...you will replace them soon.
good luck
