I am in the market of a traveler home and what to pull a vehicle. It will be my wife and I and occasionally a second couple.
My question is this. RV's are everywhere, and Ive seen quite a few Truck Conversions. Has anyone seen information comparing these two options. I am looking for as much information as possible, but cant seem to find any. Please help.
I am presently doing a conversion. I have a 1997 Freightliner with a 32 ' steal box with 2 slides. I bought the truck in March and worked part time stripping the old converion ) an old rv interior) out so I could start from scratch. The 1000 mile drive home was a thrill. I could drive at the same speed as the truck traffic and got 10 mpg. I have now installed new interior wall material, carpet, cabinets, bathroom and shower, new electrical and part of the plumbing. The building process in similar to building a house. The people at Lowes have been very helpful. I am probably about 50 percent complete. I will retire in May 07 which is my estimated completion date. I will have approximately 55-60K invested when complete. The advantage is if anything breaks I will be able to make the repairs myself. I know how it was installed. Should I breakdown on the road a regular big truck mechanic will be able to do the repairs quickly and get me going. The downside may be insurance and an individual will have a hardtime getting a loan because it is homemade. So you need cash for a project like this. I am also going to be heavy, over 40,000 lbs. The DOT is considering the requirement of a CDL license to operate one of these rigs.
