Questions about Ford 460 vs V-10 John 4-21-03
We're in the market for a used Class C, around 28-30 feet. We heard from a salesman that the Ford V-10 was "the" engine to have, because the 460 was a gas hog. However, the V-10 isn't available in older mh. We're trying to keep the price low, so we're definitely looking at older mh. Anyone have any experience with fuel mileage, power, etc. of the 460 vs the V-10?

I have had 2 motorhomes with the 460 & 1
with the V-10. Similar gas mileage (6-9
mpg)and similar power.I would recommend a 460 with fuel injection over a carb-
bureted one, but you will pay a little
more.Good luck in your search!

I have a Ford 460 in a 1990 Class A. It is a carborator, not fuel injection and I get about 4 mpg. Also, when starting or on a hill I get a lot of air noise from the carb. I suggest going for the V10.

Ok.......can someone out there please tell me what MPG I could expect to get with a 1997, 21' MH with only 14K miles on it? It has a Ford V-10.

Thanks in advance.

We are looking to buy a Class C motorhome with a Ford 460 engine from 1986. I believe it is Carbureted. Just wonder how the gas mileage would be on something of this type. Would it suck gas more so thaan a Safari van pulling and older 18' trailer that ways 4700lbs?

I have a 460 with well quite the modifacations done to it but it gets around 1/2 to 1 mpg and i would say a 460 is the wa to go

Thanks for the comments...it looks like we've found a deal on a late model (2000) Jayco Eagle with V10 that we can afford...we'll know tomorrow for sure!

What is the reason for a tag axle, how does it affect or not the stability of a motorhome ?

Thank You

Our 23' Tioga (460 powered) averaged 6.5 MPH pulling a 6500lb horse trailer behind it on our recent 2300 mile round-tripper to Okl. HOWEVER...I sure would like a bigger tank than that factory 35 gallon job!
