What size generator? Judy 4-6-03
We just bought a forest river cheorkee light 26 foot 5th wheel. What size generator would we need? Also can you give us an idea as to the brand? We can't get too expensive.

You need to determine the size generator by your power needs. This site has a chart and some instructions that will help in this. You can find it by clicking here.

There is also a list of companies that deal in generators at this link on the site.

Sounds like you will be driven more by price, so brand might not help. Check your local want ads. There are usually lots of options locally, which will help with service and repair needs down the road.

Hope this helps...

I have an Onan in a class B but it seems too small for the roof ac and microwave---be safe, get a little more capacity that you need and you wont be in a bind for power. thanks.

Well, I have owned a bunch of gas and diesel generators, and there are some basic questions you need to ask yourself.

How many appliances are you going to run, and how often will you run them? will they need to work on andoff, 24 hours a day, like a fridge?

I have found that a good used generator is a better bargain than the newer ones, as the construction is alsmost always more rugged. I had a 25 year old Kohler that was darned heavy for a 3000 watt machne, but it ran like a Honda, that is to say it would start after sitting for a year, and I was even to lazy to drain the crb!

Diesel is the best way to go, but if you don't have the $$$, I would recommend a good used Kohler, Hondas are always good and have good parts availability (that's why I shy away form Kawasake, yamaha, etc. too new, and forget about parts in many areas)

I haven't opwned any Onans, but they have a good rep. and the BEST in my opinion?? the little Listers from England. they are everywhere, and run and run and run and run (you get the picture) they are underrated, so they last forever. Same with Deutz, another great name, but definitely more pricy.

any questins, just drop me a line. I love machinery. right now I'm building an electrical bicycle with a bus battery and a fire truck reel-in electical motor, am dismantling three vehicles simultaneoulsy, and studiously avoiding my neighbor who thinks I am a disgrace to the neighborhood!

See ya

I have a 2004 rockwood travel trailer the generator would be running the 900 watt micro wave,a/c if needed on ocassion,I plan to run fridg on gas and hot water on gas. Would a 2500 watt be enough I need 30 amp receptacles.

Thanks Bill

Onan.com has a Genset Selector to help you determine the size generator for your RV. Go to: http://www.onan.com/onan/rvgenerators/rvGensetSelector.jsp

Note that most people underestimate their needs. Also, the make and model of your motorhome may restrict the size of your genset regardless of your needs. Be sure to talk with a local Onan dealer before you buy a replacement generator.

Try this site www.southwestfastener.com
I would suggest a 3000 watt inverter just in case you want to run some electronics (computers, etc.) Honda and Yamaha make some nice 3000 watt units.
