VW full camper recommendations FDJ 2-4-07
Hello,

My wife and I are eagerly looking to purchase a VW full camper. I would like to hear some real life criticism to help in our selection. What years produced lemons? What years are great? We would like to purchase one made from 1991 to 2003. Can you recommend a place or dealership to purchase? We are located in the south east and rarely see these automobiles.

We are willing to travel anywhere in the continental US to pick up vehicle.

Please advise.

Hi,
You all sound like us several years ago when we were looking for our camper! We have camped in our 97 EVC for 5 years now. You should first consider the engine choice. I have not driven the 5 cylinder van but I do know that a fully laden van with water, gas, coolers, full fridge, camping gear and people is a heavy vehicle. On roads in Colorado, I had to manually downshift the transmission to go up some the hills but for the highway portions past Vail etc, the VR6 ran well. It does have good power. I am not sure about lemons but I would think the VR6 being the more modern engine would be the better choice. For the most part, all of the year models basically have the same RV features. You want to ensure all of the equipment works properly. Note that the center removable seating bench is not needed for camping so don't rule out a van that does not have one. We put out feelers at the local VW dealerships and got lucky a month later.
We love our EVC as most people do. It is a club vehicle! Everyone waves and that sort of thing. With that said, we are sad to be selling ours in the next month or so. Our son now requires more sleeping room. We sleep up top and my wife sleeps below and we have basically outgrown it.
We have had some fun times. It is great to be able to pull over at a Wal-Mart or rest stop for free, catch a few winks, make eggs and bacon and continue on. And our van is a daily driver.
Feel free to email with questions. I am a big fan.

Mike

If you are still interested in a Eurovan Camper, I have a 2000 for sale. We recently moved from California to Indiana, and have a two year old and newborn twins, so we won't be doing any camping anytime soon. It has almost 50,000 thousand miles and I am the original owner. We moved from California November 2006, and it has spent most of it's life around the San Francisco Bay Area.

Best Regards, David
