1985 Vanagon: idle screwed up Jarod 10-11-04
I have owned my 1985 vanagon for about four years. I have known that it has needed a tune up for several months now. We ended up evacuating for hurricane Ivan and a few hours into the trip, I lost power (went from 75 to 60, full throttle) and smoke started pouring out the back. It was night so it just looked white. The temperature gauge never went over normal and has never acted up in the past, so I seriously doubt that the engine overheated. After pulling over the idle was horrible, and acceleration took forever. I managed to drive another 400 miles while constantly checking the water and oil. Neither of which was low. After a day of rest she ran fine (aside from needing a tune up). On the way back home about an hour into the trip, I lost power again and had to drive all the way back at 60 miles an hour with horrible gas mileage (much worse that ever before). Anyway my mechanic could not get it to loose power on him but he didn't bring it on the highway. It happened again just last week about an hour into the drive on the highway, no smoke this time, only 60 mph, no acceleration, and horrible gas mileage. If anyone has any idea what it is please contact me.

Thank you,
Jarod

My Van is having the same problem right now. I have done extensive tuning, replaced mass air flow, all sensors, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, filters, fuel pump, i have done alot of trouble shooting and have never solved the problem,

I just read in the last couple of mins, about a guy with the same problem, he said to disconnect the idle stablizer and by-pass it. I think this is done by unplugging the two connectors on the right side of the engine compartment wall( by the coil) and plug them together to by-pass the unit itself.

I am going to try this.

have you fixed yours yet?
